IISc tops QS World University Rankings India, overtaking IITs

The QS World University Rankings are out, and the Indian Institute of Science’s sharp rise of 31 places takes it to the top spot among Indian institutes. Bengaluru-based IISc has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian university in the 2023 QS World University rankings. It has left behind IITs and IIMs. IIT-Bombay got the second position while IIT-Delhi was pushed to third.

The top-ranked Indian institute got 155th on the global list, while IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi ranked 172 and 174, respectively. They have better their position by five and 11 spots, respectively. Only three institutes from India are in the top 200, showing the sorry state of our education sphere. However, a total of 27 Indian institutes are among the top 1,000 globally, five more than the previous year.

QS World University Rankings considers six parameters while compiling the ranking — academic reputation (AR), employer reputation (ER), faculty-student ratio (FSR), citations per faculty (CpF), international faculty ratio, and international students ratio. IISc has worked hugely on CpF, criteria in which it is the global leader.
