Every state in India demands more central universities because the Ministry of Education pays all expenses through UGC. Delhi has a maximum number of 7 central universities, Uttar Pradesh has the second maximum number of 6 central universities, and Bihar has the third maximum number of four central universities.

There are currently four central universities in Bihar. Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) is the youngest central university in Bihar, established in 2016. Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University is Bihar’s oldest central university, established in 1905.

1. Nalanda University

Nalanda University is one of the oldest universities in the world and it was functional between the 5th and 13th centuries. In 1193, Nalanda University was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji. During the 2nd East Asia Summit in 2007, the sixteen-member countries decided to resurrect Nalanda University. In 2009, Australia, China, Korea, Singapore and Japan promised further support.

Nalanda university started its first academic session on 1 September 2014 with 15 students in the School of Historical Studies and the School of Ecology and Environmental studies. The modern campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir spans over 160 hectares (400 acres). The university work is still under construction. Currently, Nalanda University has 48 academic staff and 410 students.

2. Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University

Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University, formerly known as Rajendra Agricultural University, was established in 1905 during British India. University offers undergraduate (UG) programmes in 08 disciplines viz. Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Community Science, Fisheries, Biotechnology, Forestry and Food Technology. In addition, the Master’s programme in 27 subjects and the Ph.D. programme in 14 subjects.

The two famous courses offered by this university are 2-year professional degree programs named MBA (Agribusiness Management) and MBA (Rural Management) for agricultural and allied sector graduates. Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University is one of the oldest central universities in Bihar.

3. Central University of South Bihar (CUSB)

On 27 February 2014, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar laid the foundation for the Central University of South Bihar (CUSB). It is located at Panchanpur-Gaya, a highway near Gaya, Bihar. Once the CUSB gets completed, it will have 300 acres campus and it will be the second biggest central university in Bihar by area.

It was established under the Central Universities Act, 2009 (Section 25 of 2009) as Central University of Bihar (CUB) and the name since changed by the Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2014 to Central University of South Bihar (CUSB). The Central University of South Bihar offers three Under Graduate Courses, one PG Diploma course, 27 Master Programs and 24 Ph.D. Programs.

The fourth name in our list of central universities in Bihar is Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU). The University became functional on 3 rd February 2016. MGCU is situated in Motihari (Bankat), on National Highway 28.

MAHATMA GANDHI CENTRAL UNIVERSITY (MGCU) offers 4 Undergraduate, 22 Postgraduate, 19 M.Phil. and 20 Ph.D. Programmes. MGCU has a total of 07 Schools and 20 Teaching departments. MGCU came into existence by an Act of Parliament, Central Universities (Amendment) Act 2014 (No. 35 of 2014).
