This decision was shared on Monday, just three months after she became Japan’s first woman Prime Minister.

Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has not resigned. She announced that she will dissolve the lower house of parliament on January 23 and call a snap general election on February 8. The election will decide all 465 seats and will be her first major test since taking office.
By calling early polls, Takaichi aims to use her strong public support to strengthen control of the ruling LDP and protect her coalition’s slim majority. The vote will focus on higher government spending as living costs rise. Markets reacted positively, with Tokyo shares jumping over three percent after diplomatic talks and plans.

Japan PM Sanae Takaichi has worked to strengthen relations with the United States. During US President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan last October, both leaders praised each other and agreed on closer cooperation. The two sides also signed a joint document describing the start of a new “golden age” in US–Japan relations, showing a strong commitment to partnership and long-term cooperation.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has faced strong criticism from China since November last year. The issue began after she said Japan could use its Self-Defence Forces if China attacked Taiwan. Her statement upset Beijing and led to a diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Since then, relations between Japan and China have become very tense and have fallen to their lowest level in more than ten years.
