Its name means “festival of the breaking of the fast.” It is traditionally marked with a special meal—which, for many Muslims, is the first daytime meal they’ve eaten in a month. The festival is usually celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, after the sighting of the new moon.

Eid ul Fitr 2023 is expected to be celebrated on Friday, April 21, or Saturday, April 22, 2023, in India. The final date is not confirmed because it depends on the sighting of the moon.
