Gujarat’s education system has come under fresh scrutiny after the Union Government’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Progress Report 2024-25 revealed that the Gujarat students is falling behind the national average in several important education indicators. The report points to challenges in school completion, higher education enrolment, and learning outcomes, highlighting the need for stronger efforts to improve the quality of education.

One of the biggest concerns mentioned in the report is the Class 12 completion rate. According to the latest data, Gujarat students only 50.82% of students in Gujarat complete their higher secondary education, while the national average stands at 61.14%. This means Gujarat is more than 10 percentage points below the country’s average.

The report also indicates that 49.18% of Gujarat students leave school before completing Class 12. In simple terms, nearly one out of every two students does not finish higher secondary education. This high dropout rate has raised concerns among education experts, as completing school is considered essential for better career opportunities and access to higher education.

Apart from school education, the report also highlights gaps in higher education enrolment and student learning outcomes. These findings suggest that many students either do not continue their studies after school or face difficulties in achieving expected learning standards in classrooms.

Although Gujarat is widely recognised for its industrial growth, infrastructure, and economic development, the report suggests that investment in education needs equal attention. Experts believe that improving school infrastructure, reducing dropout rates, supporting economically weaker students, and enhancing teaching quality can help improve educational performance.

The SDG Progress Report serves as an important reminder that economic growth alone is not enough. Developing a skilled and educated population is equally necessary for long-term progress. Better access to education, improved learning outcomes, and stronger support for students can help Gujarat prepare its young population for future opportunities.

The findings underline the importance of strengthening the state’s education system so that more students complete their schooling, pursue higher education, and contribute to Gujarat’s overall social and economic development.
