The report by EIU titled “Democracy in sickness and in health?” was topped by Norway. The next four countries in the list are Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Canada. India has been gradually declining in the Democracy Index.
The Ganga Times, Gaya: India slipped two places to 53rd spot in the Democracy Index 2020 ranking. Economist Intelligence Unit — the organisation that conducts the global ranking, said that the decline in a number of countries’ rankings has been sponsored by the “democratic backsliding” by authorities and “crackdowns” on civil liberties globally.
In 2019, India’s overall score was 6.9, while in the 2020 Democracy Index, it fell down to 6.61. This gives an outlook of the current state of democracy in the country. Despite this, India is ranked higher than most of its neighbouring countries.
“With mounting pressure on India’s democratic norms, India’s score fell from a peak of 7.92 in 2014 to 6.61 in 2020 and its global ranking slipped from 27th (in 2014) to 53rd as a result of democratic backsliding” under the current regime, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said.
