Jaswant Singh Khalra was a well-known Sikh human rights activist who worked tirelessly to uncover the truth about the disappearance and killing of nearly 25,000 people in Punjab after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His investigation began when he learned that one of his classmates had been shot by the police. A few days later, his friend’s mother also went missing.
Khalra visited the police station to file a missing person report, but the police refused to register the complaint. He then searched hospitals and other places, where he discovered that his friend’s mother had allegedly been killed in a fake police encounter. During this investigation, he realized that thousands of people had similarly disappeared in Punjab. This discovery motivated him to continue his search for the truth and expose the alleged human rights violations.
Why Jaswant Singh Khalra Dead Body Never Found
Jaswant Singh Khalra was abducted in September 1995 and was later murdered. According to court findings, a group of police officers kidnapped him and kept him in illegal custody at a police station and other locations for several days before killing him. After his death, he was reported as missing.
Khalra’s body was never recovered. According to the prosecution’s case, his body was disposed of in the Sutlej River, making it impossible to recover due to the river’s strong current and the passage of time. Investigators later searched for his remains but were unable to find them.
Some accounts and allegations have also claimed that, after disposing of his body, police officers later recovered it and secretly cremated it as an unclaimed or unidentified body. However, these claims have not been conclusively established, and his body has never been officially recovered.
