ndian Railways has introduced a 15-minute current booking rule for Vande Bharat Express trains, making travel more convenient for passengers who need to book tickets at the last moment. Under this facility, travelers can reserve vacant seats up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure of the train.

The booking option is available not only at the train’s originating station but also at intermediate stations along its route. This initiative has significantly improved passenger convenience while increasing occupancy and revenue for Indian Railways.

What is the 15-Minute Rule for Vande Bharat Ticket Booking?

The 15-minute booking rule allows passengers to purchase available tickets shortly before the train departs. Earlier, many seats remained vacant because reservations closed well before departure. With this new system, unsold seats can now be booked until just 15 minutes before the train leaves the station, giving last-minute travelers another opportunity to secure confirmed tickets.

The rule is particularly beneficial for business professionals, emergency travelers, students, and passengers whose travel plans change unexpectedly.

Benefits of the 15 Minute Booking Rule

1. Convenient for Last-Minute Travel

One of the biggest advantages is the flexibility it offers. Travelers who make sudden travel decisions no longer have to rely on unreserved coaches or alternative transport. If seats are available, they can book a confirmed ticket just minutes before departure.

2. Better Seat Utilization

Many reserved seats previously remained empty because passengers cancelled or failed to travel. The new booking system ensures these seats are offered to other passengers, improving overall occupancy.

3. Higher Revenue for Indian Railways

Selling seats that would otherwise remain vacant helps Indian Railways generate additional income without increasing the number of train services. This makes the system more efficient and financially beneficial.

4. Faster and Easier Booking

Passengers can use the IRCTC platform or railway reservation counters to check seat availability and complete bookings quickly before the departure deadline.

5. Greater Travel Flexibility

The facility provides more freedom to passengers whose schedules change due to work, family emergencies, or other unexpected situations. It reduces the stress of planning trips several days in advance.

Positive Impact on Southern Railway

The 15-minute booking facility has delivered encouraging results for Southern Railway, where several Vande Bharat Express services operate across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Popular routes include:

  • Mangaluru Central – Thiruvananthapuram Central
  • Chennai Egmore – Nagercoil
  • Coimbatore – Bengaluru Cantt.
  • Mangaluru Central – Madgaon
  • Madurai – Bengaluru Cantt.
  • Dr. MGR Chennai Central – Vijayawada

The increased flexibility has encouraged more passengers to choose Vande Bharat Express for short-notice journeys.

Growth in Passenger Numbers and Revenue

The success of this initiative is reflected in Southern Railway’s operational performance. During FY2025–26, its 24 Vande Bharat train services carried approximately 77.38 lakh passengers, generating around ₹803.86 crore in revenue. In comparison, FY2024–25 recorded 54.12 lakh passengers with ₹540.65 crore in revenue. The sharp increase demonstrates how improved booking flexibility has contributed to higher occupancy and stronger financial performance

It allows people to book confirmed seats at the last moment, reduces vacant seats, improves train occupancy, and increases railway revenue. For passengers with urgent or unplanned travel needs, this feature offers greater convenience and flexibility, making Vande Bharat Express an even more reliable option for fast and comfortable rail travel across India.
