The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) is completed, and the Delhi Kashmir Vande Bharat Express train between Srinagar and New Delhi will soon start.
Out of the total 272 km of the USBRL project, 209 km have been completed in phases. The first phase, covering 118 km from Qazigund to Baramulla, was finished in October 2009. Next, the 18 km stretch from Banihal to Qazigund was completed in June 2013. Then, 25 km from Udhampur to Katra was finished in July 2014. Most recently, the 48.1 km stretch from Banihal to Sangaldan was completed in February this year.
The Chenab Rail Bridge, standing 359 meters (around 109 feet) above the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir, is about 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. Spanning 1,315 meters, this bridge is a key part of a larger project to connect the Kashmir valley to the Indian Railway network.
Right now, there is no direct train between Delhi and Kashmir, so people have to travel by train till Jammu and then by car or bus, which takes a long time. Because there’s only road connectivity, the traffic is heavy, and it takes about 10 hours to get from Jammu to Srinagar. When the Delhi Srinagar Vande Bharat Express starts, the journey will become much faster and more comfortable. The travel time will be reduced from 10 hours to just 4 hours between Jammu and Srinagar.
