Shatabdi Express trains were first introduced in 1988 and were named ‘Shatabdi’, meaning ‘century’, to commemorate the birth centenary of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Shatabdi Express mainly connect to metro cities only. Shatabadi Express mostly runs during the day and returns to the sources station the same day till late evening.

The Vande Bharat Express are day train services that connect major Indian cities which are in a distance of less than a day’s time. The train, then known as Train 18, was designed by the RDSO and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). On 27 January 2019, the services using Train 18 sets were named Vande Bharat Express, with the first service commencing on 15 February 2019.

List of Differences Between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express

1. Train Speed

One of the most popular differences between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express is train speed. Shatabdi express trains can run at a maximum speed of 150 km/h, while Vande Bharat Express trains can run at a maximum speed of 180 km/h.

2. Train Manufacturing Cost

The cost of manufacturing a 16-coach Vande Bharat train would be roughly Rs 100 crore to Rs 110 crore, which is around 6 crore per coach, while the cost of manufacturing Shatabdi Express is 5 to 5.5 crore per coach. The manufacturing cost of the Vande Bharat Express train is, including the 2 engines, and the manufacturing cost of the Shatabdi Express is without engines.

3. Facilities

There are many differences between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express in terms of facilities; the Bathroom size of Vande Bharat Express is bigger than Shatabdi Express. Vande Bharat Express has an automatic door-closing system, while Shatabdi Express has a manual door-closing system. Vnade Bharat Express has more leg space in coach as compared to Shatabdi Express trains.

4. Ticket Price

The ticket price of the Shatabdi Express train is relatively higher than the Vande Bharat Express train. Now Indian Railway has discounted the Vande Bharat Express ticket price on many routes.

5. Distance Covered

There are differences between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express in the distance covered by a single train. Shatabdi Express has the longest route of 709 km, while Vnade Bharta Express has the longest route of 759 km between New Delhi to Varanasi.

6. Number Cities Connected

Currently, the Shatabdi Express is running on only 21 routes and connects only metro cities while the Vande Bharat Express train is now available on more than 25 routes and connects some smaller cities also.

7. Travel Time

The other differences between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express is travel time. The speed of the Vande Bharat Express is higher than Shatabdi Express, so the travel time in the Vande Bharat Express train is less than as compared to Shatabdi Express.

8. Route Covered

Shatabdi Express is running on only 21 routes, while Vande Bharat Express is going to start on 75 routes. Shatabdi Express train has sources station only in Metro cities, while Vande Bharat Express connect tier 2 and tier 3 cities also.

9. Digital Display

The Vande Bharat Express has digital display for upcoming stations name but Shatabdi Express do not haveany digital display. Digital display help passengers to get to know about about upcoming station name.

10. Spacious

One of the most important differences between Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express is seating design. Vande Bharat Express seat can move up to 360 degree which makes it more comfortable and spacious while Shatabdi Express seat do not move.
