Intensive ticket inspections by Western Railway over the past eight months yielded ₹93 crore in fines, emphasizing lawful travel and discouraging unauthorized passengers, especially in AC coaches.
In a bid to ensure hassle-free and comfortable travel for genuine passengers, Western Railway (WR) has intensified ticket checking drives across Mumbai suburban local services, Mail/Express, and passenger trains. Between April and November 2024, these efforts resulted in the recovery of a massive ₹93.47 crore in fines, including ₹30.63 crore from the Mumbai Suburban section alone.
According to Shri Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, November 2024 witnessed the recovery of ₹12.91 crore from over 2.01 lakh ticketless or irregular passengers, which also included unbooked luggage cases. Out of this, ₹4.03 crore was collected from 82,000 cases detected in the Mumbai Suburban section.
To address unauthorized entry into AC local trains, Western Railway organized frequent surprise checks, penalizing nearly 40,000 offenders and collecting over ₹1.31 crore in fines from April to November 2024. Western Railway conducted intensive ticket-checking drives across all train types, including local, AC local, mail, express, and superfast services. The drives aimed to curb ticketless travel and ensure a hassle-free experience for genuine passengers.
A significant number of offenders, including those traveling unauthorized in AC coaches, were caught during these checks. Strict action was taken, and substantial fines were collected from defaulters. Western Railway continues to emphasize the importance of traveling with valid tickets and urges passengers to cooperate in maintaining smooth and lawful train operations for the convenience of all travelers.
Indian Railway has reiterated its appeal to the public to always travel with valid tickets to avoid penalties and contribute to smoother rail operations.
